(Our daily Bread)Common Cents

Common Cents
READ: Mark 12:41-44
[Jesus said,] “This poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury.” —Mark 12:43
In 1987, Mike Hayes, a freshman at the University of Illinois, found a unique way to finance his education. He convinced a popular columnist at the Chicago Tribune to ask his readers to “send in a penny for Mike.”
“Just one penny,” Hayes said. “A penny doesn’t mean anything to anyone. If everyone . . . looks around the room right now, there will be a penny under the couch cushion . . . or on the floor. That’s all I’m asking. A penny from each of your readers.”
In less than a month the fund was up to 2.3 million cents. Donations came in from all over the US, as well as Mexico, Canada, and the Bahamas. Mike eventually ended up with $28,000!
The common cent just isn’t worth much—unless it’s added to a whole bunch of other pennies. The woman we read about in Mark 12 gave the equivalent of a fraction of a penny, which was “all that she had” (v.44). But Jesus honored that little bit.
The widow’s sacrifice was an example and an encouragement to the disciples—and to us. She gave all she had. Have we ever been so generous? Jesus used an unnamed widow to teach us what giving is all about.
It was less than a cent, yet it was a priceless gift of love to God. — Cindy Hess Kasper
One grace each child of God can showIs giving from a willing heart;Yet, if we wait till riches grow,It well may be we’ll never start. —D. De Haan
God looks at the heart, not the hand; the giver, not the gift.

The President and First Lady watch the Fourth of July, 2009 fireworks in Washington DC

Super Foam-erator

In my quest for summer activities to entertain the boys for free or cheap I came across this easy bubble maker in our favorite kids magazine!!Go to: Family Fun Magazine for this and more cool things.
Super Foam-erator
Materials:
Plastic water bottle, empty
Scrap of terry cloth, such as an old wash cloth
Rubber band
Xacto knife
Bubble or dish soap
Small plate or flat lid

1) Using an Xacto knife, carefully cut the bottom off of a small water bottle.
2) Cover the bottom opening with a scrap of terry cloth and secure tightly with a rubber band.
3) Dampen terry cloth with a little water
4) Pour bubble or dish soap onto a plate and dip terry cloth end into soap.
5) Blow gently into top of bottle — have fun!

My nephews Andolis Jr 5, and Adonis 3, had a blast with this outside, it’d probably be fun in the bathtub as well. They decorated all of the outdoor furniture with foam and gave each other foam “hairstyles”. When you're all done playing, hose everything and every body off!

Day at the Gym

You are in a crowded gym when you suddenly realize you need to fart.

The music is really loud, so you time your farts with the beat.

You let 5 strong and loud ones go back to back.

After a couple of songs, you start to feel better as you approach your stopping point .

As you are leaving the gym , people are really staring you down, and

that's when you remember: you've been listening to your iPod

Hugs and Hope

"Happy Mail" Wanted!
Children fighting for their lives have very little to smile about. You can change that by sending them some "Happy Mail." Cheery cards give these kids a few more smiles, a little more hope, and a reason to get out of bed each day.
Experience the satisfaction of making a sick child's day and giving them something to look forward to. Send a card and a hug -- one of the smiles you create just might be your own!
